FUTURES Friday Seminar welcomed back Ravneet Virdee (Saint Martin's Old Girl 2015-2017) for an inspiring session - An Introduction to the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP).
The session gave students a valuable opportunity to explore one of the NHS’s most competitive postgraduate pathways. Ravneet began by outlining the purpose of the NHS Science Training Programmes and the wide range of specialist routes available, explaining how the STP equips graduates with the skills needed for professional roles across healthcare science.
She provided a clear overview of the programme’s structure, taking students through Years 1, 2, and 3 of training. This included the balance between clinical rotations, academic study at Masters level, workplace-based assessments, and specialist development. Her insights helped students understand both the rigour and the rewards of the programme.
A highlight for many was her explanation of what a Medical Physicist is and the essential role they play within the NHS. She shared examples of how medical physicists ensure the safe use of radiation and advanced technologies, support imaging and radiotherapy services, and contribute to innovations that improve patient care.
After the seminar Ravneet had tour of her old school, where she enjoyed seeing how the site has developed since her time here.
We are extremely grateful to Raveet for giving her time, sharing her expertise, and offering such valuable guidance to students as they consider their future pathways.
Our FUTURES team works hard to produce a varied programme of FUTURES Friday Seminars, designed to appeal to a broad range of pupils. We have a programme of FUTURES Friday Seminars, and so if you are interested in taking part, Mrs Chillcott would be grateful to hear from you: ChillcottR@SolSch.org.uk. There is no need to be an experienced public speaker, or particularly senior in your organisation, as what we are looking for is a taster of ‘real life’ within various sectors.
