Old friends catch up at the reunion of the Class of 1975

“A thoroughly enjoyable occasion - it was great to see some old schoolmates and to catch up on what everyone had been up to these last 50 years!”

In early June, 24 members of the Class of 1975 returned to school, some of the first time in fifty years, for a tour of school and afternoon tea. A further ten alumni who left between 2000 and 2010 also came along to catch up with each other and see how the campus had changed in the years since they left school too.

The tour took in some familiar spaces, such as School House, the Chapel and Big School, but also newer spaces like the George Hill Building and Alan Lee Pavilion, showing just how much had changed at Solihull since the Class of 1975 departed. For the younger alumni, there were still changes to be discovered, as many had not seen the Cooper Building, Solihull’s dedicated Sixth Form Centre, which opened in 2015. A chance to examine some of the many historical school and honour boards photos dotted around the campus was welcomed, with alumni pointing themselves out and spotting favourite former teachers and classmates too. The reunion event concluded in the Refectory, now much changed for all the day’s guests with afternoon tea and a glass of wine as guests reminisced about their school days, with one remarking: “I had a great time. The catering was plentiful and appetising and, when mixed with good company, made for a splendid afternoon! It was great to meet up with old chums again’ “

One of the furthest travellers to the event was Peter Shepherd (Fetherston, 1968-1975 ), who came down from Cumbria for the event with his wife, Barbara. He said: “We had a very enjoyable time, and it was great seeing the school again, places I remember, new areas which look very impressive, and the chance to meet up with people - some of which I hadn't seen for the last 50 years. It was a brilliant day, well organised, so thanks for all your time and hard work. It was also so encouraging to see that the school is thriving so well.”
