Get the Children Out! – 7:00pm Wednesday 8 November 2023
Dear Alumni, Former Parents, Former Staff and Friends of the School,
We have a wonderful opportunity to hear in person, from a Holocaust survivor, a renowned Holocaust educator, and a panel of refugees in one memorable evening.
Mindu Hornick MBE
Mindu was born in Czechoslovakia in 1929. Life changed in 1939, when her father was drafted into a forced labour battalion and the rest of the family were sent to a ghetto. At 14 Mindu was sent on a cattle truck bound for Auschwitz. Her brothers and mother perished on arrival. After eight gruelling months of forced labour, she was liberated. Mindu will share her experiences with our audience. She was awarded an MBE for services to Holocaust education and is a Pride of Birmingham’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner.
Mike Levy
Mike Levy is a researcher for the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Association for Jewish Refugees, an educator with the Holocaust Education Trust and former Chair of The Harwich Kindertransport Memorial and Learning Trust.
Get the Children Out! The unsung heroes of the Kindertransport – author, Mike Levy
During the night of the 9th and 10th November 1938, the Nazis unleashed unprecedented violence on German and Austrian Jews. Following the fatal shooting of a low-ranking German diplomat by a Jewish man in Paris, the signal went out from the Nazi hierarchy to begin a state-wide attack on Jews, their businesses and property. That terrible night became known as ‘Kristallnacht’ – the night of broken glass and it sent shock waves of revulsion throughout the world, not least in Britain. That night and the weeks to follow were the trigger for the Kindertransport. The largest single act of the rescue of Jewish people during the Holocaust period. 10,000 children were brought to Britain between December 1938 and September 1939.
Our audience will hear Mike chart the fascinating history behind this rescue and the people, mostly forgotten, who got the children out, and into safety in Britain.
